The new Gwadar International Airport is all set to kick off operations on August 14. Final preparations? They’re done. Sources from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) tell us that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will likely be there to oversee the soft launch of this significant project.
The very first flight to land at Gwadar International Airport will be a special Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight heading out from Karachi.
This airport is a big part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), showing just how hard the Civil Aviation Authority & China have worked together on it. It’s a huge step forward for better regional connections and stronger infrastructure, playing an important role in boosting economic growth & development in the area.
- Total Capacity
The new Gwadar International Airport will have space for big planes like Airbus A380 & Boeing 747-8, plus smaller ones like ATR-72 & Boeing 737-900ER.
- Runway
There’s gonna be one runway, measuring 3,658 meters long & 75 meters wide for those larger aircraft. This runway comes with a taxiway that’s 23 meters wide and two paved shoulders around 10.5 meters each, right next to it. And guess what? They plan on adding a second runway to the east of the airport down the line. Additional facilities like an Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower, crash fire rescue services, and a fuel farm will also be built.
- Construction
This modern airport, which costs about Rs54.98 billion to build, features runways made to meet international standards. Just think! It’ll handle large aircraft such as the Airbus A380 with ease.
